Religion

The Christian religion dominated the coalfields communities in the early days. Many denominations built their places of worship in the towns, and these mostly remain today. Denominations included Methodist (Primitive and Wesleyan), Roman Catholic, Anglican, Baptist and Salvation Army, along with many others.

The cemeteries are also divided into denominational sections, the surnames often indicating the ancestral origins of the folk buried there.
